The story of Russia-Turkey friendship started in 2014 after Russia’s South Stream gas pipeline project was abandoned due to sanctions imposed on Russia for its aggression in Ukraine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlPNd…). Not to look like a loser, Putin quickly announced an alternative pipeline – Turkish Stream that would pass through Turkey, although negotiations between Russia and Turkey were not finalized yet. Since then Turkey was portrayed in Russian mass media as its best FRIEND.
However, in November 2015 Turkey “betrayed” Russia and shot down Russian fighter jet that despite previous warnings violated Turkish airspace again. The thing is that Turkey was upset that Russian jets were bombing Turkmen in Syria and gladly taught Russians a lesson when an opportunity appeared. Despite such public humiliation, Putin was too scared to strike the NATO member back. Instead, he accused Turkey of supporting ISIS terrorists, banned import of Turkish tomatoes and forbade Russian tourists from going to Turkey. It is either the lack of Turkish tomatoes in Russia or Russian tourists in Turkey that Russia and Turkey started negotiations about becoming FRIENDS again. Russian propaganda media was (and still is) very puzzled about how to portray the “supporters of ISIS” as Russia’s friends.
Anyway, on 10 August 2016 Putin’s friend-enemy-friend Erdogan came to Russia.
Yet, Erdogan humiliated Putin again making him to wait in front of hundreds of cameras.
